The differential carrier houses gears submersed in a lubricating fluid. High temperatures from normal use cause the fluid to break down and lose some lubricating effectiveness. Replacing the axle fluid as recommended helps ensure the lubricating properties of the fluid are intact, thus maximizing driveline efficiency. Lack of proper maintenance may cause bearing failure, abnormal wear on gears, and a breaking or lock-up of the axle.
